Configure Selectors and Reusable Inquiry Objects (RIO)
A selector is a feature that enables you to choose a filter value via a drop-down list; it can be used instead of standard filter selection to create a column in your inquiry. Selectors contain a list of available values which map directly to another item.
Several selectors are pre-defined; however user-defined selectors can also be created. One of the pre- defined selectors in the JD Edwards Balances template is the current period, for which you can choose whether you are displaying your current period or financial reporting current period. For current fiscal year, you can choose whether you are displaying your current year or financial reporting current year. In Oracle EBS, Currency and Set of Books are examples of selectors set by default.
The benefits to using a selector include the following:
- Avoid unwanted column expansion
- Retain formatting when changing filter selections such as period/year
- Automatically change value columns related to the current selection
- Make calculations more dynamic
- Share between reports via RIO
A user with a Configurator license can add a selector as a separate filter through Filter Layout. If you have more than 1 selector in an inquiry, each can have its own filter.
By default, all users have access to selectors; however, this functionality is granted through Capabilities so if you do not have access, check with your Administrator.
Multiple selectors can be used in an inquiry. In fact, the current and cumulative periods and current first year already default into a new GL Balances inquiry:
Pre-defined Selectors
| ITEM | EXPLANATION |
|---|---|
| Current Period | A selector with two default values: Reporting Current Period and Financial Current Period. By default, Reporting Current Period is made the current value. |
| Cumulative Period | A relative selector (relative to Current Period) |
| ITDC Period | A relative selector (relative to Current Period) |
| YTD Period | A relative selector (relative to Current Period) |
| RCurrent Period | A relative selector (relative to Current Period) |
| NBCurrent Period | A selector with two default values: Reporting Current Period and Financial Current Period. By default, Reporting Current Period is made the current value. |
| NBCumulative Period | A relative selector (relative to NBCurrent Period) |
| NBITDC Period | A relative selector (relative to NBCurrent Period) |

| Next Year | A relative selector (relative to Current Year) |
| Currency | Oracle EBS system users can choose the currency being used |
| Set of Books | Oracle EBS system users can choose the set of books being used |
Current Value of a Selector
The Current Value is the value that will be used when the selector is in the filter. For example, if the Current Value in a Period Selector is 1, as soon as you add the selector to the Period Filter, it will represent Period 1.
Change the ‘Current’ Value of a Selector
There are three ways that you can change the Current Value in a selector:
- From the Inquiry Objects menu, click on Selectors to launch the Choose Selectors dialog. From here you can select the current value of a selector using the drop-down arrow to the right of it:
- From the Inquiry Objects menu, click on the drop-down menu next to Selectors and choose Setup Selectors. Highlight the specific selector and then at the bottom of the dialog, use the drop-down menu next to Current Value to choose the current value:
- If a user with a Configurator License has added the selector to the inquiry as its own filter, you can change the current value directly in the filter:
- As long as the selector is in the filter field, the inquiry is updated when the current value of the selector changes:
In this example, if I change the current value to another period, the column in the inquiry is updated and any column formatting is retained:
|

Locked Option for the Current Value
When designing an inquiry and creating selectors, you can lock in the current value so that Viewer users accessing this inquiry cannot change the current value. Once you lock the value in the Setup Selectors dialog, you must unlock it before you can change the current value:
Current Period/Fiscal Year vs Financial Reporting
For JD Edwards ERP system users, the ‘current’ period and ‘current’ year default from Company 0. (This information is stored in the F0010 table.) JD Edwards ERP system users have both of these periods/ years defined for each company in JD Edwards. Since financial report preparation can lag behind the actual closing of books, they can be different values. The default is to show the current period and current year values; however you can easily change them to the Financial Reporting Current Period and Financial Reporting Current Year.
Note: Oracle EBS system users only have the current period defined in Oracle.
To change the ‘current’ period or year to reflect the ‘financial reporting period/year’ instead of the default ‘current period or year’, follow the below steps:
- From the Inquiry Objects menu, click Selectors.
- Select CURRENT (Fiscal Year) or CURRENT (Period).
- Via the drop-down menu, select whether the current value reads the ‘current’ period or year or ‘financial reporting current’ period or year:
Create a New Selector
To create a new selector:
- From the Inquiry Objects menu, click the drop-down menu to the right of the Selectors button and select Setup Selectors.
- Click New.
- Define the following in the New Selector dialog:
- Field – the field on which the selector will be based (During creation it is always possible to change the Field, but a warning message appears if you change it after the values are added. If you choose to continue, all values will be removed.)
- Name – a unique name for the selector
- Caption - the name displayed in the column header for the column created by the selector.
- Click Add to launch the Add Selector Value dialog.
- Choose the Type of values you wish to add. (Note that the Settings are customized based on the Type you choose.)
- Fixed Value – specific values, e.g. Year 2014, 2015, 2016; Period January, February, March; Departments 301, 302, 303; Business Unit 301,302,303. You can type values in manually or use the Visual Assist to select them. This field does not support calculated items, ranges, wildcards and single items with attributes such as < (less than), <= (less than or equal), > (greater than), >= (greater than or equal) or <> (not equal). Continuing in this example, we will add specific years as the fixed values,
- Imported Value –values imported from your ERP system. This will load the setting every time you open the inquiry or Template and will provide the appropriate value for it (e.g. Current Period).
- Relative Value – a value that relates to another selector but adds an attribute to it. It changes whenever the underlying selector changes.
- Click OK to return to the New Selectors dialog. You will then see all the values listed.
- Click OK to return to the Setup Selectors dialog. Click Apply if you are going to create a selector relative to this one right away, and otherwise click OK again to return to your inquiry. The selector has now been added to the list of available selectors.
Note: <<CODE>> and <<CAPTION>> can be used as dynamic placeholders so that the applicable code/caption is used on the column.
Note: The associated Add Selector Value dialog will be customized based on your choice of Field. For example, period and year can use all selector types, but for business unit, only fixed values are available.
Note: While multiple business units can be selected for use in one Selector, only one of these business units can be active at one time.
Import Value Selectors
Imported Value Selectors directly import data from the JD Edwards ERP system. The below table lists the following: what imports are available, which fields they apply to, which items they can represent and which columns from the database they use. All these values read the record for the Model Company 00000 from the Company Constants Table (F0010).

Creating a Selector Based on an Imported Value
A selector based on an Imported Value is a type of selector that draws data directly from your ERP system. The Imported Value functionality can be used with the period and year fields.
Note: Whenever you load an inquiry containing a selector based on an imported value, the values are refreshed from your ERP system.
Below is an example of importing the Current AP Year.
- From the Inquiry Objects menu, click the drop-down menu to the right of the Selectors button and select Setup Selectors.
- Click New.
- Define the following in the New Selector dialog.
- Field – the field on which the selector will be based. During creation it is always possible to change the Field, but a warning message appears if you change it after the values are added. If you choose to continue, all values will be removed.
- Name – a unique name for the selector.
- Caption – the name displayed in the column header for the column created by the selector.
- Click Add to launch the Add Selector Value dialog.
- Choose the Imported Value Type to import values from your ERP system.
- Choose the item to import from your ERP system.
- Click OK to return to the New Selector dialog.
- Click OK to return to your inquiry.
Note: <<CODE>> and <<CAPTION>> can be used as dynamic placeholders so that the applicable code/caption is used on the column.
Relative Value Selectors
JD Edwards system users can use relative value selectors in the Balances Template. A selector based on a Relative Value is a type of selector that is linked to an underlying fixed selector; when the current value of the underlying selector changes, the relative selector is updated as well. The Relative Value functionality can be used with the period and year fields.
Relative Value selectors already exist and are commonly used in most reports. For example, the period filter value CUMULATIVE is a Relative Value type selector. When the CURRENT Value (which is an Imported Value) is updated in the JD Edwards system, the CUMULATIVE value will update automatically as well.
Available relative values when creating a relative selector:

Example: Relative selector
Relative Value selectors already exist and are commonly used in most reports.
For example, the period filter value CUMULATIVE is a Relative Value type selector. When the CURRENT Value (which is an Imported Value) is updated in the JD Edwards system, the CUMULATIVE value will update automatically as well.
In the selector setup for CUMULATIVE, you can see below that it is relative to the current period and its relation to CURRENT is that it is the cumulative period.
Example: Creating a new relative value selector
In this example, we will create a selector called PD Selector which is based on fixed periods 1-12. Then we will create a selector relative to the original one called YT Selector, where it shows the YT or Year To period amount relative to the original selector. So if you choose to display Period 1, period YT1 will also display. If you choose to display Period 2, period YT2 will also display.
- If the target selector is not yet set up, you need to first create this. In this example, a target selector called PDSELECTOR is set up as a fixed value selector with periods 1-12:
- After clicking OK and returning to the Setup Selector dialog, click Apply on the target selector before creating the relative selector.
- To create the relative selector, click New from the Selectors button (on the Inquiry Menu).
- Define the following in the New Selector dialog:
- Field – the field on which the selector will be based
- Name – a unique name for the selector
- Caption – the name displayed in the column header for the column created by the selector.
- Click Add to launch the Add Selector Values dialog.
- Define the Settings:
- Relation - the relation to the original or target selector
- Selector – the original selector this is based on
- Click OK to return to the Add Selector dialog.
- Click OK to return to your inquiry.
- Add the selectors to the appropriate filter and they will then be columns in the inquiry:
- You can now change the current value of the target period selector in the Choose Selectors dialog (accessed by clicking on the Selectors button in the Inquiry Objects menu), and it will automatically update the relative selector in the inquiry:
Note: <<CODE>> and <<CAPTION>> can be used as dynamic placeholders so that the applicable code/caption is used on the column.
Note: A user with a Configurator License can add the selector as its own filter to the inquiry, making it even easier for users to change the current value of the selector.
Add a Selector to an Inquiry
Once a selector is created, you can add it to the filter for the field it is based on. You can do either of the following:
- Type in the name manually into the filter.
- Use the Visual Assist to find the selector and add it to the current selections. Go to the Selectors tab with the Visual Assist to find all available selectors.
For example, if you created a selector based on period, go to the Period Assist and click on the Selectors tab to see the available selectors. You can then add the appropriate selectors to the filter by adding them to the Current Selections and clicking OK to return to your inquiry.
Selectors and Calculations
One of the benefits of using a selector in a calculation is that it is dynamic; when you change the value of the selector, the calculation is updated accordingly.
When defining the calculation, you can choose the selectors in the drop-down menu of the field they are based on:
Edit a Selector
When you edit an existing selector from the Setup Selectors dialog, you cannot change the name or field of the selector; however, you can change the caption and the values included within the selector using the Add and Remove Buttons:
Selectors and Pivoted Columns
A selector can be used when its associated field is pivoted.
The following example uses a Fixed Type selector for Business Unit. The Business Unit has been pivoted to be a column through Pivot Inquiry, the selector has been added to the Business Unit filter, and basic formatting has been applied to each column.
The current value is business unit 63 which is the ‘Coastal Branch’. This is being shown in the column headings as one of the four dimensions:
If the current value of the selector is changed (in this case, changed to ‘Valley Branch’), the associated column dimensions also are modified to reflect the change in the selector’s current value and now show that business unit. Equally as important, the formatting has not been removed. The formatting is associated with the selector and not the actual business unit. This is important as it allows display settings like formatting to be retained when key values of the inquiry are modified.
Quarter to Date Selectors
Hubble offers true Quarter To Date (QTD) financial reporting. This feature is available in the Balances Templates for General Ledger (GL), Job Cost (JC), Fixed Assets (FA) and Advanced Cost Accounting (ACA). (These selectors are not applicable, and therefore not present, in the Weekly Balances templates.) When activated, your financial reports will display amount data up to your CURRENT period defined in JD Edwards for the current quarter.
The example below shows CURRENT period defined as Period 7; therefore the QTD Selector for Quarter 3 displays amounts ONLY for Period 7.
The Quarter to Date (QTD) selectors are relative selectors, and there is one for each quarter: QTD1, QTD2, QTD3, and QTD4. Their value is dependent on whichever period (Current Period, Financial Reporting Current Period, or Fixed Assets Current Period) is designated as the CURRENT period in the Choose Selectors dialog. Therefore the first step is to see what period is defined for CURRENT; then you can bring in the appropriate QTD Selector for your report.
Also it is important to note that the QTD items respect current period but not current year. For example, if it is currently Period 2, then QTD1 is always equal to P1+P2, regardless of whether the column it appears in is for the current year or some other year.
Below are some examples.
For QTD1 (Quarter 1 to date):
- If the current period is 1, QTD1 = P1
- If the current period is 2, QTD1 = P1+P2
- If the current period is 3 or more, QTD1 = P1+P2+P3
For QTD2:
- If the current period is less than 4, QTD2 = BLANK
- If the current period is 4, QTD2 = P4
- If the current period is 5, QTD2 = P4+P5
- If the current period is 6 or more, QTD2 = P4+P5+P6 and so on.
Changing the Period that the QTD to which the Selectors are Based
JD Edwards offers more than one “current period”, such as “current reporting period", “current financial reporting period”. By implementing QTD as a relative selector, you can choose which of these variables you want to base it on. Additionally you can set them up differently in different reports.
It is not required to define a cumulative quarter to date by referring to the CUMULATIVE selector.
- From the Inquiry Objects menu, click on the drop-down menu next to Selectors and select Setup Selectors to open the Selectors Setup dialog.
- In the drop-down next to CURRENT (Period), select the current period you wish to use.
In the example below, either Period 7, which is the Current Period, or Period 6, the Financial Reporting Current Period, can be used.
BLANK appears as the Value for a QTD Selector
BLANK displays when there are no values for the QTD, or Quarter To Date, selectors since your current period is prior to that quarter.
For example, in the Selector Setup dialog I have CURRENT = Period 2:
- QTD1 = Year To Period (Periods 1 & 2)
- QTD2 = BLANK (Has not occurred yet)
- QTD3 = BLANK (Has not occurred yet)
- QTD4 = BLANK (Has not occurred yet)
REASON: When your CURRENT Period is defined as 2, then the ‘Current Value’ descriptions that display for QTD1:QTD4 are displayed as BLANK. Since you are only in Period 2, the rest of the periods are not activated, so BLANK displays.
If CURRENT = Period 8:
- QTD1 = Quarter 1 (Periods 1, 2, 3)
- QTD2 = Quarter 2 (Periods 4, 5, 6)
- QTD3 = Periods 7 and 8
- QTD4 = BLANK (Has not occurred yet)
REASON: When your CURRENT Period is defined as 8, then that means it is possible to display Periods 1- 8 which is QTR1 + QTR2 + Period 7 and 8. You are not yet displaying any periods contained in QTD4 therefore it still displays as BLANK.
QTD Selectors in the Balances Inquiries
The Period Selectors QTD1 through QTD4 are available on the Balances Templates for GL, JC, FA and ACA. To add these QTD Selectors to your existing financial reports from previous releases, you can do it 1 of 2 ways:
- Add them via RIO (Reusable Inquiry Objects).
- Manually create them.
Manually Creating QTD Selectors
If you do not have a Configurator license, you can manually create the QTD Period Selectors on your existing reports.
- From the Inquiry Objects menu, click the down arrow next to Selectors and select Setup Selectors.
- Click New.
- In the New Selector dialog, set Field = Period, Name = QTD1 and Caption = Quarter 1 to Period:
- Click Add.
- In the Add Selector Value dialog, select Relative Value, Relation = Quarter 1 to Period and Selector = CURRENT.
- Click OK.
- Create the remaining QTD Period Selectors in the same way, but using the appropriate Quarter to Period for the relation for each.
Selectors and Reusable Inquiry Objects
A user with a Configurator license can add a selector to RIO, making it available to other users in order to use it in their reports.
Note: For Hubble Web, Report designers can add RIO filters in reports to be used on workspaces. Currently the only type of RIO item that can be updated in Hubble Web is a selector. As with all RIO items, the filter needs to be added to the Explorer Preview Layout of the report so that it is shown in the filter list within the workspaces containing this report.
Note: In the Hubble Web, the RIO Selector automatically updates the RIO object with the chosen value without prompting the user to cancel or unsubscribe, unlike the Desktop version. This provides a more streamlined user experience.
Add a Selector to RIO
To add a selector to RIO:
- Open the inquiry where the item exists.
- Access RIO by clicking on Reusable Inquiry Objects from the Inquiry Objects menu.
- Highlight the selector on the left panel to be moved into RIO.
- Highlight the folder where you want it moved to on the right panel.
- Click the arrow in the middle of the screen to move the item over to the right.
Subscribe to a Selector in RIO
If a user with a Configurator License has added a selector to RIO, users can subscribe to it in their own reports. To subscribe to a selector that has been added to RIO:
- Open the inquiry in which you want to subscribe to the selector.
- Access RIO by clicking on Reusable Inquiry Objects from the Inquiry Objects menu.
- Subscribe to the selector by checking the box to the left of it.
- Click either Apply to apply the selector or OK to apply it and exit the dialog at the same time.
RIO Options for Selectors
When a selector is subscribed to RIO, you can choose which values within the selector are subscribed:
- Available values only– the list of all available values. Choosing this means that if a user tries to change the list of available values for a selector, he/she will be prompted with the Unsubscribe Library Object dialog.
- Available values and current value – the list of all available values as well as the current value being used. Choosing this means that if a user tries to change the list of available values OR the current value for a selector, he/she will be prompted with the Unsubscribe Library Object dialog.
When you have subscribed a selector to RIO, it will have a green or orange arrow next to it depending on how the RIO Options are set.
Add QTD selectors via RIO
- From within a new inquiry created in 2012.2 or above, a user with a Configurator license can add the QTD selectors to RIO (Inquiry Objects menu > Reusable Inquiry Objects).
- Open your existing report that was created in a version prior to 2012.2.
- Add the QTD selectors to that report (Inquiry Objects menu > Reusable Inquiry Objects).
Unsubscribe Library Object Dialog when Changing a Selector’s Current Value
The selector is a RIO object, and depending on how the RIO Options are set for it, you will be prompted with the Unsubscribe Library Object dialog by changing the available values for the selector and/or the current selector value.
When presented with this dialog, you can choose one of the following:
- Cancel the changes - cancel changes you have made to the selector.
- Unsubscribe the object from the Reusable Inquiry Objects and update this inquiry’s version only - keep the change you have made to the selector and unsubscribe it from RIO, meaning other reports subscribed to the selector will not reflect any changes.
- Keep the subscription and update the object in the Reusable Inquiry Objects with your changes - all reports subscribed to the selector will be updated with the changes you have made.
Note: Only users with a Configurator License have the 3rd option.
Selector RIO Options and Linked Reports
If linked reports are using a selector that is subscribed to RIO, it is recommended that the Available Values Only setting is used in RIO Options for the selector. This way the current value can be changed without the RIO object being modified and drilling to an inquiry with the same subscribed selector (which is set to Available Values Only as well) will pass the current value.
Reusable Inquiry Objects (RIO)
Reusable Inquiry Objects or “RIO” is a repository that allows you to share any of the following items between inquiries:
- Calculations
- Custom Columns
- Formats
- Hierarchies
- Time Series
- Selectors
- User Defined Captions
Items can be shared between inquiries so that any change made to the item would be reflected in all inquiries that are subscribed to it the next time those inquiries are run.
Reusable Inquiry Objects is designed to save you valuable time and make it easy to share commonly used items between inquiries. For example, you might want to add a particular calculation to all of your inquiries. Rather than creating this calculation separately in each individual inquiry, you can create it once, add it to RIO, and it will be available to add to any other inquiry. Also, any change to the item will update it in all inquiries that are subscribed to it.
Only users with a Configurator License can add items to RIO; however, any user can subscribe to an item that is already in RIO.
Reusable Inquiry Objects Dialog
To access RIO, click on Reusable Inquiry Objects, which is located on the Inquiry Objects menu in the Inquiry Objects group.
If you have a Configurator License, two panels will display – a left and right panel. The left panel shows all items in the currently-open inquiry; these items can be moved into RIO to make them available to other users. The right panel shows all items already added to RIO. Users without a Configurator license will see the right panel only.
The options available in this dialog are:
- Modify – modify a RIO item
- Delete – delete a RIO item
- New Folder – create a new folder within Reusable Inquiry Objects
- Properties – view properties of a RIO item
- Copy – copy an item to another folder within Reusable Inquiry Objects (button is in the lower right corner of the dialog)
- Additionally, there are arrows you can use (up/down/left/right) to move the location of an item within Reusable Inquiry Objects. You can also drag and drop to move an item. The button on the right is used to copy an item:
Global Item versus a Profile-specific RIO
Items stored in the Global folder will be available no matter which Hubble Profile is being used when accessing the product. Items stored in the Profile folder will only be available for the particular Profile being used. Unless you have a specific reason for only having something available in a specific Profile, we recommend making it available at the global level. The reason for this is that if the specific Profile is ever deleted in Administrator, any RIO objects associated with that Profile are also deleted.
If a particular inquiry is subscribed to an item that exists in both Global and the specific Profile folder, the item in the specific Profile will take precedence over the object in the Global folder. This allows you to subscribe to a company standard at the global level but then override it at a Profile level if desired.
Organize RIO
Items can be grouped into folders, and it is very helpful to have a folder for each type of item that is in RIO: Formats, Hierarchies, Time Series, Selectors and User Defined Captions. Not only will this help keep the items well organized, but you can also subscribe to everything in a folder at one time if desired.
Add Items to RIO
Only users with a Configurator license can add items to Reusable Inquiry Objects; however any user can subscribe to an item that is in Reusable Inquiry Objects.
To add an item to Reusable Inquiry Objects:
- Open the inquiry where the item exists.
- Access Reusable Inquiry Objects by clicking on Reusable Inquiry Objects from the Inquiry Objects menu.
- Highlight the item on the left panel to be moved into Reusable Inquiry Objects.
- Highlight the folder where you want it moved to on the right panel.
- Click the arrow in the middle of the screen to move the item over to the right.
Subscribe to an Item or Folder in Reusable Inquiry Objects
To subscribe to an item or folder in RIO:
- Open the inquiry in which you want to subscribe to the item.
- Access Reusable Inquiry Objects by clicking on Reusable Inquiry Objects from the Inquiry Objects menu.
- In the Reusable Inquiry Objects Panel, subscribe to the item by checking the box to the left of it. Alternatively, to subscribe to all items within a folder, check the box to the left of the folder.
- Click either Apply to apply the item(s) or OK to apply the item(s) and exit the dialog at the same time.
